Joshua Chinedu Obika Defects Again: Reps Member Quits APC for NDC

Hon. Joshua Chinedu Obika, a member of the House of Representatives, has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to join the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The move comes as a major surprise to the political landscape, occurring just two months after Obika initially joined the ruling party following his departure from the Labour Party (LP).

The lawmaker, who represents the AMAC/Bwari Federal Constituency, formally notified the House of his decision through a letter read during Wednesday’s plenary session. In the correspondence, Obika cited internal friction and a misalignment of goals within the APC as his primary reasons for leaving, claiming that his vision for his constituents was no longer being met under the party’s current structure.

Obika’s political journey over the last quarter has been a whirlwind. After winning his seat on the platform of the Labour Party, his move to the APC in early 2026 was seen as a strategic alignment with the federal government.

However, his stay was remarkably brief, making this latest switch to the NDC one of the fastest party-to-party transitions in recent legislative history.

The leadership of the APC has yet to issue an official statement regarding the defection, though some party members have privately expressed frustration over what they describe as “political nomadism.” Conversely, the NDC has welcomed Obika with open arms, viewing his entry as a significant boost to their numbers in the lower chamber as they look to strengthen their position ahead of the next legislative cycle.

This defection highlights the ongoing fluidity of political loyalties within the National Assembly. Political analysts suggest that Obika’s move may trigger further realignments within the House, as representatives continue to navigate the changing dynamics between the ruling party and the opposition. For now, Obika maintains that his primary focus remains the effective representation of the people of Abuja, regardless of his party platform.
