Onor Eyes PDP Ticket, Vows to Unseat Bola Tinubu
A spokesperson for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suggested that former senator Sandy Onor may emerge as the party’s presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections, expressing confidence that he could defeat incumbent President Bola Tinubu.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, disclosed that Onor has already obtained the PDP’s presidential nomination form. He explained that if no other aspirant joins the race before the close of nominations, Onor could emerge as the party’s flagbearer unopposed.
Mohammed described Onor as an experienced and capable politician, highlighting his legislative record and communication skills. He noted that the PDP would rally behind him if he secures the ticket through the party’s internal process. Onor, who represented Cross River Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly, has formally declared his intention to run for president after purchasing the party’s expression of interest and nomination forms.
The PDP spokesperson also expressed optimism about the party’s chances in the next election cycle, insisting that Onor has the capacity to challenge and defeat Tinubu at the polls.
The development comes at a time when internal divisions persist within the PDP, particularly following the stance of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, who has openly supported Tinubu’s re-election bid. Party officials, however, maintain that Wike’s position is personal and does not reflect the party’s official direction.
As preparations for the 2027 elections gradually take shape, political observers say the PDP’s ability to unite its ranks and present a strong candidate will be critical to its chances of reclaiming power from the ruling party.
