Otti in Soup Over Alleged Anti-Party Activities, to Face Panel

The Labour Party (LP) has announced plans to investigate Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, and other prominent members of the party over alleged anti-party activities.

In a statement released on Thursday by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), the LP expressed concern over what it described as a “disturbing trend” of disloyalty and conduct that undermines the party’s core values and electoral interests.

According to the NWC, the probe will focus on accusations that certain party members have engaged in activities contrary to the ideals of the Labour Party. These include alleged collaboration with opposition parties, refusal to support LP candidates during elections, and making public statements that contradict the party’s official position.

“No individual, no matter how highly placed, is above the constitution and discipline of the Labour Party.

“The party will thoroughly investigate these allegations and take necessary disciplinary action to preserve its integrity,”the statement read.

Although Governor Otti’s name was specifically mentioned in the statement, the NWC noted that other top-ranking officials are also under scrutiny. A disciplinary panel, the party revealed, will be constituted in the coming days to handle the probe.

Sources within the party say the decision follows several reports submitted by LP chapters across different states, accusing some leaders of undermining the party’s unity during recent elections and internal processes.

Governor Otti has not publicly responded to the allegations.

However, aides close to the Abia governor have dismissed the move as politically motivated, suggesting it may be an attempt to suppress reformist voices within the party.

Political analysts believe the development could further widen internal cracks within the LP, which has been gaining national prominence since the 2023 general elections.

The outcome of the investigation may have significant implications for the party’s stability and its preparations for upcoming electoral contests.

The Labour Party has called for calm among its supporters, assuring members that due process will be followed and that the goal remains the protection of the party’s vision and democratic principles.
