Jonathan Honours Yar’Adua on 16th Death Anniversary
Former Nigerian president, Goodluck Jonathan has paid tribute to late president Umaru Musa Yar’Adua on the 16th anniversary of his death, describing him as a servant leader remembered for humility, integrity and dedication to national service.
In a statement shared on Facebook on Tuesday, Jonathan reflected on his time as vice president under Yar’Adua, noting that their administration was guided by a shared commitment to justice, inclusiveness and the rule of law.
He described the late leader as a principled figure who placed national interest above personal ambition and led with quiet conviction, adding that Yar’Adua believed the strength of a nation lies in respect for democratic values and the sanctity of the ballot.
Jonathan said Yar’Adua’s leadership style stood out for its simplicity and focus on service, particularly in prioritising stability and governance over political gain.
He also highlighted the late president’s role in peace building efforts, describing it as a lasting legacy that continues to serve as a reference point for leadership in Nigeria.
The former president urged current leaders to draw lessons from Yar’Adua’s life, stressing the importance of transparency, accountability and a people centred approach to governance.
He concluded by calling on Nigerians to uphold the ideals the late leader represented and offered prayers for the repose of his soul.
Yar’Adua was sworn in as president on May 29, 2007, succeeding Olusegun Obasanjo, and remained in office until his death on May 5, 2010 after a prolonged illness. His administration is noted for initiatives such as the Niger Delta Amnesty Programme and efforts to strengthen adherence to the rule of law.
