Obidient Movement Calls for Calm Amid Reports of Opposition Realignment

The Obidient Movement has called for calm among its supporters following growing speculation about a possible political realignment involving Peter Obi and other opposition figures ahead of the next election cycle.

In a statement released on Saturday via X, the group’s National Coordinator, Yunusa Tanko, said Mr Obi is currently engaged in consultations with political allies and stakeholders to determine what he described as the most effective path forward for Nigerians.

The movement urged its members to remain patient and avoid being influenced by unverified reports, adding that Mr Obi would address supporters and the public at an appropriate time to clarify the situation and outline his next steps.

According to the statement, the ongoing engagements are being guided by the movement’s core principles, including integrity, accountability and citizen participation. It added that any eventual decisions would reflect its broader vision of national transformation.

The call for restraint comes amid reports suggesting a possible alliance between Mr Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State. Sources familiar with the discussions also pointed to talks around a potential political platform linked to Seriake Dickson, a former governor of Bayelsa State, although none of the individuals involved has publicly confirmed plans to switch parties.

The reported developments follow growing dissatisfaction within sections of the opposition over internal party structures and leadership uncertainties. Recent rulings by the Supreme Court of Nigeria, which redirected key disputes to the Federal High Court, have further contributed to the uncertainty.

Political analysts say the situation has heightened tensions within opposition ranks, as key figures consider strategic alliances that could influence the balance of power in the lead-up to future elections.
