Ground Breaking for Modern Student Hostels Hold at YABATECH, LASU

The Federal Government has commenced construction of new modern student hostels at two major institutions in Lagos. Ground was broken for the NextGen Hostel Residence at Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) and Lagos State University (LASU).

This project is part of efforts to significantly improve living conditions for students in tertiary institutions.

The new hostels will have a capacity of 1,500 beds and come with modern facilities including a gym, games room, restaurant, and canteen. The initiative is in line with the Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which aims to enhance the overall student experience beyond just academics. The hostels are expected to provide a safe, comfortable, and vibrant environment that supports learning and personal growth.

The project is being executed through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) involving the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and private investors. The Federal Ministry of Education has also announced plans to invest ₦250 billion in the development of additional student hostels across more than 90 institutions nationwide.

Institutions have further been directed to use their TETFund grants for the rehabilitation of existing hostels and other campus facilities.

To support better campus life, the government is also rolling out 24 mini grids for reliable power supply and distributing 540 electric tricycles to improve movement within schools.

The new hostels at YABATECH and LASU are expected to be fully completed and operational within the next 24 months.

This development has been welcomed as a major step towards addressing the long-standing shortage of decent accommodation for students. Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa stated that the government is not just building hostels, but investing in a better future for Nigerian students. Many students and stakeholders hope this marks the beginning of sustained improvement in campus living conditions across the country.
