Iraq Seeks Waiver From US Restrictions on Iranian Airlines
The Iraqi government is seeking an exemption from recent United States restrictions targeting Iranian airlines, warning that the measures could disrupt air travel, trade and economic activities in the region.
Iraqi officials said discussions are ongoing with Washington to secure special arrangements that would allow continued air links and aviation operations affected by the sanctions.
The request follows a broader US campaign aimed at increasing economic pressure on Iran by targeting its aviation sector. The measures include sanctions against Iranian airlines and warnings that companies providing services to them could face penalties.
According to Iraqi authorities, maintaining air connectivity is important for commercial activities, passenger travel and broader economic cooperation. Officials expressed concern that disruptions to aviation services could affect businesses and travellers who rely on regional flight networks.
The United States has argued that the sanctions are intended to isolate Iran economically and restrict activities it says support destabilising operations in the region. US authorities have expanded restrictions on Iranian aviation entities as part of a wider pressure campaign against Tehran.
Iraq has traditionally maintained close economic and political ties with both the United States and Iran, often finding itself balancing relations between the two countries during periods of heightened tension.
Government officials in Baghdad said they are engaging with US counterparts to find a solution that addresses the concerns of all parties while limiting the impact on Iraq’s aviation sector and economy.
The development comes amid broader regional tensions and ongoing efforts by several countries to manage the effects of sanctions, security concerns and disruptions to trade routes across the Middle East.
Iraqi authorities expressed hope that discussions with Washington would result in an arrangement that preserves vital air links while maintaining cooperation with international partners.
