The Ondo State Government has officially commenced the disbursement of ₦3.82 billion to settle the outstanding gratuity payments for 985 state retirees. State officials confirmed that the funds are designated specifically for senior citizens who retired from the state’s public service in 2015.

This massive payout is part of an ongoing initiative aimed at clearing the accumulated backlog of unpaid pension benefits owed to former civil servants.

During the flag-off ceremony held in Akure, state officials emphasized that the payment demonstrates the administration’s commitment to prioritizing senior citizens’ welfare. Government representatives noted that many of the beneficiaries had waited over nine years to receive their rightful retirement entitlements.

The state authorities assured remaining retirees that subsequent batches of payments would be processed systematically as funds become available.

The financial relief comes at a crucial time for the elder citizens, many of whom have faced severe economic hardship and health challenges since leaving active service. Pensioner union leaders expressed deep gratitude to the state leadership for honoring its promise and reducing the long-standing financial burden on former workers. Representatives of the retirees encouraged the government to maintain the current momentum so that subsequent sets of retirees do not face similar delays.

To ensure transparency and prevent fraudulent claims, the state pension board established a streamlined verification process at the payment venues. Beneficiaries underwent physical identification and document validation before their bank accounts were directly credited with their full entitlements. Officials highlighted that the direct electronic transfer method was adopted to eliminate middleman delays and ensure each retiree receives their exact amount.

As the disbursement exercise continues across designated centers, public sector workers nearing retirement expressed renewed confidence in the state’s pension system. Community leaders and civil society groups have lauded the initiative, describing it as a humane gesture that restores dignity to those who devoted their productive years to public service. The Ondo State Government reiterated its goal of eventually eliminating all inherited gratuity debts before the end of its current tenure.
