Liverpool legend, Jamie Carragher has poured cold water on Manchester United’s title hopes for the new Premier League season, arguing that manager, Michael Carrick, while doing a solid job stabilising the club, does not possess the managerial quality needed to deliver the Premier League or Champions League at Old Trafford.

Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, Carragher praised the calm Carrick has brought to a club that spent recent seasons mired in off-field drama and managerial upheaval. Carrick took interim charge following Ruben Amorim’s dismissal in January and impressed enough during that stretch to be handed a permanent, long-term contract by INEOS ahead of the new campaign.

Under his stewardship, United secured a third-place finish and a return to the Champions League, a turnaround Carragher credited directly to the calmer atmosphere Carrick has installed around the team.

That praise came with a significant caveat. Carragher argued that United’s real need right now is 12 more months of exactly that kind of stability rather than a repeat of the chaos that defined the club’s recent history, but questioned whether Carrick has the “stardust” required to push United from merely competitive to genuinely title-winning. He was blunt about where he sees Carrick’s ceiling, saying he does not believe the former United midfielder will win either the Premier League or the Champions League with the club, even while acknowledging the job done so far has been a good one.

Rather than framing this as a criticism of Carrick’s ability outright, Carragher cast him more as a stabiliser than a trophy-delivering visionary, someone whose job may ultimately be to restore United to a position strong enough to attract an elite, proven winner as manager down the line. He suggested Carrick could still have a productive season and leave the club in a healthier state for whoever eventually takes it to the top.

On the playing side, Carragher pointed to United’s transfer business as part of the broader picture. The club has strengthened its midfield this summer with the signings of Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos in a combined deal worth around £85 million, with another midfielder and a left-back still being pursued before the window closes.

Carragher flagged some unease over United’s pursuit of Mateus Fernandes in particular, with the Portuguese midfielder instead joining Tottenham Hotspur in a deal of the same value, a move he suggested reflected United’s continued reluctance to compete at the very top end of the market for the players a genuine title challenge would require.

Manchester United have not lifted the Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season in charge in 2013, and while Carrick’s first full season in charge comes with renewed optimism following last term’s improvement, Carragher’s comments serve as a reminder that stability alone, in his view, will not be enough to end that wait.
