C’River Governor Urges Lawyers to Defend Democracy Against Unconstitutional Acts
C’River Governor Urges Lawyers to Defend Democracy Against Unconstitutional Acts The Governor of Cross River State, Senator Bassey Otu, has urged legal practitioners in Nigeria to remain steadfast in defending democracy and resisting any form of unconstitutional conduct in the country.
Otu made the call while speaking at the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Calabar Branch 2026 Bar Week, held in Calabar, where he emphasized the critical role of lawyers in safeguarding the rule of law and democratic governance.
Represented by his deputy, Peter Odey, the governor described members of the legal profession as key pillars of justice and democratic stability, noting that their influence extends beyond the courtroom into the broader protection of constitutional order.
He stressed that democracy can only be sustained where constitutional provisions are respected and where accountability remains central to governance. Lawyers must continue to uphold justice, defend democratic values, and resist any attempt to undermine the constitution,” he said, adding that his administration remains committed to strengthening judicial independence.
Otu also described accountability as a fundamental requirement for a functioning democracy, urging legal practitioners to remain vigilant in the face of any actions that threaten democratic institutions. In his remarks, the Chairman of the NBA Calabar Branch, Enome Amatey, expressed concern over what he described as increasing disregard for court orders and constitutional processes in the country.
He called on lawyers to take a more active role in protecting the rule of law, warning that weakening democratic institutions could have long-term consequences for governance.
The President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Afam Osigwe (SAN), represented at the event by Ntufam Mba Ukweni (SAN), also commended the theme of the programme and encouraged lawyers to uphold constitutional principles, particularly ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The event ended with a renewed call for unity among legal practitioners to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy and ensure strict adherence to constitutional provisions.
