Farotimi Stokes Reactions as He Questions Credibility of 2027 Elections
Outspoken Nigerian lawyer and activist, Dele Farotimi, has stirred fresh controversy after declaring that anyone who believes the 2027 general elections in Nigeria will be free and fair is “a fool.”
Farotimi made the remark during a recent public appearance captured in a viral video that has since gained traction across social media platforms. In the clip, he expressed strong doubts about the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system, arguing that prevailing political conditions do not support credible polls.
His comments come as political activities gradually intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with parties and key stakeholders already positioning for what is expected to be a highly contested race. Known for his critical stance on governance and systemic issues, Farotimi has consistently raised concerns about corruption, institutional weakness, and what he describes as entrenched political interests undermining democracy.
His latest statement aligns with his long-held view that significant reforms are needed to restore public confidence in the electoral process. The remark has, however, generated mixed reactions.
While some Nigerians have supported his position, citing past electoral irregularities and lack of accountability, others have criticised the statement as overly dismissive and capable of eroding trust in democratic institutions.
Analysts say concerns over election credibility in Nigeria have persisted over the years, often focusing on the role of the electoral body, security agencies, and allegations of political interference.
These issues are expected to dominate public discourse as preparations for the 2027 polls gather momentum. As debate continues, attention is likely to shift toward electoral reforms and measures aimed at ensuring transparency and fairness in future elections.
