The University of Calabar recently conferred a Doctorate Degree in Law upon the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu.
This honor was presented during the institution’s 38th convocation ceremony in recognition of his academic persistence.
Beyond the honorary nature of the event, the university specifically highlighted Kalu’s doctoral research. His project was adjudged one of the most outstanding, earning a featured spot in the University’s Achievement Exhibition on Contribution to Knowledge.
Reflecting on the achievement, Kalu described the doctoral journey as a demanding and transformative process. He emphasized that the success was built on significant personal sacrifices, including rigorous intellectual struggles and many sleepless nights.
The milestone marks a homecoming for the Deputy Speaker, who is a multi-stage alumnus of the institution. He previously earned both his Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) and Master of Laws (LL.M) degrees from the same university.
During his address, Kalu noted the rarity of his academic rank, citing data that fewer than 100,000 Nigerians hold doctoral degrees. He stressed that this achievement is a call to intellectual leadership rather than a mere title.
The Deputy Speaker also linked his academic focus to his legislative work in the House of Representatives. He reaffirmed his commitment to expanding educational access through the establishment of several new federal colleges and universities.
Kalu expressed deep gratitude to the University’s Governing Council and his academic supervisors. He urged his fellow graduates to use their research to drive real-world transformation and bridge the gap between knowledge and progress.
