Navy Arrests Personnel Following Brawl with Soldiers During Tinubu’s Bayelsa Visit

By 𝔸bdulrazak Tomiwa

The Nigerian Navy has confirmed the arrest of personnel who were involved in a public altercation with fellow military officers in Bayelsa State.

The incident occurred on Friday during the official visit of President Bola Tinubu to the state.

A viral 53-second video captured the heated confrontation, showing a “Naval Police” Hilux vehicle involved in the dispute. The footage shows a driver stepping out to exchange words with another individual before returning to his seat.

The situation turned violent when a soldier carrying a rifle approached the vehicle and punched the Naval Police driver. This single act triggered a chaotic brawl between the personnel attached to both security teams.

The clash quickly escalated into a free-for-all, with officers from both sides exchanging blows in full view of the public.

Stunned civilians watched the breakdown of discipline in disbelief as the President was departing the venue.

The exact cause of the disagreement remained unclear at the time of the report. Despite the high-profile nature of the presidential visit, the personnel engaged in physical combat rather than maintaining order.

The Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abi Folorunso, confirmed the arrests via a social media post on Saturday. He stated that the individuals involved are currently in custody and facing internal investigation.

The affected personnel are undergoing administrative and disciplinary procedures in line with military regulations. The Navy emphasized its commitment to maintaining the high standards of discipline expected of the armed forces.
