Igbomina Group Urges Kwara to Enforce Supreme Court Ruling on Ganmo Stool

The apex socio-cultural organisation of Igbomina people, Omo Ibile Igbomina, has called on the Kwara State Government to enforce a Supreme Court judgment delivered in March 2019 affirming the Oluganna lineage as the sole rightful claimant to the Ganmo traditional stool in Ifelodun Local Government Area.

At a weekend press briefing, the group said there was no justification for the continued delay in implementing the ruling, particularly regarding the installation of Abdulyeqeen Oluwakayode Kolawole as the legitimate occupant of the throne.

Speaking on behalf of the group, its National President Bisi Fakayode described the delay in issuing the Letter of Appointment and Staff of Office to the Oluganna designate as a violation of the rule of law and disregard for judicial authority.

He noted that both the Court of Appeal in Ilorin and the Supreme Court had delivered consistent and binding judgments, in line with findings of a 1978 arbitration report, affirming the exclusive rights of the Oluganna lineage to the stool.

Fakayode also dismissed allegations linking former President of the Court of Appeal Ayo Salami to efforts to frustrate the implementation of the ruling, describing such claims as unfounded and inconsistent with the retired jurist’s reputation.

However, he urged Salami to publicly address the allegations to prevent misinterpretation, stressing that a clear statement would help preserve confidence in the integrity of the judiciary.

The group further cautioned the Sunmonu Okunoye family of Idiape, Ilorin, against dragging the jurist into the dispute or attempting to undermine his credibility.

Reaffirming its position, the organisation said it is the responsibility of government to uphold legally established rights and ensure that court judgments are fully implemented without interference.

It warned that failure to act decisively could erode public trust in institutions and set a dangerous precedent, while demanding immediate issuance of the Oluganna’s Letter of Appointment, presentation of the Staff of Office and full enforcement of all subsisting court rulings.

The group reiterated its commitment to justice, peace and the preservation of traditional institutions, urging all stakeholders to respect the rule of law.
