Gunmen Kidnap Delta Council Chairman in Violent Hotel Raid

By 𝔸bdulrazak Tomiwa

Gunmen have kidnapped Chief Bright Abeke, the Chairman of Sapele Local Government Area in Delta State.

The violent incident occurred around 7:00 PM on Friday at a hotel located along Owumi Road in Sapele.

The attackers, reportedly numbering about fifteen, arrived at the scene in three vehicles, including a Range Rover SUV. They immediately began shooting into the air to create panic and disperse the guests and staff.

During the chaotic raid, the assailants targeted the council chairman and forcefully took him away. A local vigilante member, identified as Ufuoma, was shot by the gunmen during the operation and is currently receiving medical treatment.

The kidnapping took place less than 24 hours after anonymous threats of violence were reportedly issued in the area. This has heightened concerns regarding the recent surge of insecurity and kidnapping cases within the state.

Security forces have since cordoned off the entry and exit points of Sapele to prevent the kidnappers from escaping. The state police command has deployed a special anti-kidnapping unit to track the suspects and rescue the victim.

SP Bright Edafe, the Police Public Relations Officer for Delta State, confirmed the incident and the ongoing rescue mission. He stated that the Commissioner of Police has ordered all available resources be used to ensure the chairman’s safe release.
