Maguire: “I’m Still One of the Best defenders in Both Boxes”

Manchester United defender, Harry Maguire has issued a bold reminder of his aerial prowess and defensive value, declaring that he remains “arguably one of the best in the world” when it comes to dominating both penalty areas.

The 33-year-old centre-back made the comments following a week of significant milestones, including a new contract extension at Old Trafford that will keep him at the club until June 2027.

“I still believe, even at my age, I’m arguably one of the best defenders in the world in both boxes,” Maguire stated in a recent series of interviews. “I don’t think that’s in question really; I can be really effective later on in games, whether you’re holding on to a lead or trying to chase a game.” His confidence is backed by recent data showing a resurgence in form under interim manager Michael Carrick, with Maguire ranking near the top of the Premier League for duels won over the last ten matchdays.

The veteran defender’s resurgence marks a major turnaround in a career that has seen significant highs and lows. After being stripped of the captaincy and facing intense public scrutiny in previous seasons, Maguire has successfully fought his way back into the starting XI. He credited his mental resilience for this “redemption arc,” noting that while the criticism was difficult for his family, it only served to make him stronger on the pitch.

Beyond club football, Maguire has set his sights on the 2026 World Cup later this year. Having missed the Euros due to injury, he admitted to being “desperate” to represent England on the world stage one last time. “I still think there’s an important part I can play, in whatever role the manager would want me for,” he added. His recent recall to the national team for the March international break suggests he remains firmly in the plans for the upcoming tournament in North America.

With his future at Manchester United secured for another year, Maguire is focused on helping a young squad push for major trophies. Refuting interest from clubs abroad, including rumors of a move to Inter Miami, he emphasized that his best moments in a red shirt are still ahead. For a player who was nearly sold two seasons ago, Maguire’s defiant message and consistent performances suggest he is far from finished at the highest level.
