Immigration Boss Suspends Seme Border Commanders Over Extortion Claims

The head of the Nigeria Immigration Service has suspended the commanders at the busy Seme border in Lagos. This action came after many reports of officers demanding extra money from travelers.

People crossing the border said they were forced to pay bribes before they could pass, even when their documents were complete. The suspension aims to stop this bad practice and restore order at the border.

Seme is one of Nigeria’s busiest land borders, with thousands of people using it daily for trade and travel. Long waits and extra demands have made journeys stressful and costly for many. Honest officers do their work well, but a few bad ones have damaged the reputation of the entire service.

The complaints have been building up, pushing the authorities to act.

The Comptroller-General took this step to send a strong message that extortion will not be tolerated. By removing the commanders, the service hopes to bring back trust and fairness.

New officers are expected to manage the border more professionally and treat travelers with respect. This move is part of wider efforts to improve operations at all border points.

Many Nigerians have welcomed the decision, saying it shows leadership that listens to public complaints. However, some people wonder if it is enough to fully end the problem. They hope the change will lead to smoother and faster crossings without unnecessary payments.

A well-managed border can greatly help trade and make life easier for citizens.

This action serves as a reminder that public officers must serve the people honestly. Travelers can now expect better treatment at Seme border. The immigration authorities have promised to keep a close watch to prevent such issues from happening again. A clean and efficient border will build more confidence in the system.
