Yobe University Reacts to Viral Student Sleeping Outdoors Photo
The management of Yobe State University in Damaturu has dismissed concerns sparked by a viral photograph showing some students sleeping outdoors, describing the situation as temporary and linked to ongoing hostel renovation and upgrade projects.
The image, which spread widely across social media, prompted public reactions and concerns over possible accommodation shortages within the institution. However, the university clarified that the development has been misinterpreted. According to the university, several hostels are currently undergoing renovation to improve living conditions for students.
The process has temporarily reduced available bed spaces, leading to congestion in some facilities and prompting some students to seek alternative sleeping arrangements. Officials further explained that the prevailing weather conditions may also have influenced some students’ decision to sleep outside, stressing that the situation is not a reflection of a systemic failure in providing accommodation.
The Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Sani Isa, noted that hostel allocation is ongoing and that efforts are being made to ensure affected students are accommodated promptly. He added that the university is working to decongest overpopulated hostels while prioritizing student welfare.
The management assured students, parents, and the public that no student has been abandoned, emphasizing that measures are in place to provide safe and adequate housing as the renovation work progresses.
The university also urged the public to rely on official information channels and avoid spreading misleading interpretations of the viral image, reaffirming its commitment to the welfare and academic well-being of its students.
