Otti Calls on Men to Step Down for Women in 2027 Politics
Abia State Governor Alex Otti has made a strong call for more women to take part in politics.
While speaking at a funeral in Bende Local Government Area, he urged men to step down for women ahead of the 2027 elections.
He said this would help bring balance and give women a real chance in leadership.
Otti pointed out that all 24 members of the Abia State House of Assembly are currently men. He challenged the Speaker to either create more constituencies or ask some men to make way for women.
According to him, even starting with four women out of 24 would be a good step forward from having zero.
The governor also praised the important role women have played in Nigeria’s history. He mentioned the famous 1929 Aba Women’s Riot and approved a request to build monuments in honour of Abia women. He described women as strong contributors to society and encouraged them to unite and get ready for bigger opportunities in politics.
Otti made the remarks during the burial of Mrs. Chiamaka Joyce Ibekwe, the wife of a state lawmaker. He used the occasion to speak about gender equality and the need for more inclusive representation. He told women to come together so they can push for their place in government.
Many see this as a bold message on women’s participation in politics. In Nigeria, women are often underrepresented in elected positions. Governor Otti’s call has sparked discussions about how to make politics more open to both men and women.
As the country prepares for future elections, this statement highlights the ongoing conversation around fairness and equal chances. Whether through stepping down or creating space, the governor believes more women should have a voice in shaping the future of the state.
