Avoid 23 Nigerian States Over Security Fears, US Embassy Warns Citizens
The United States Embassy in Nigeria has released a new travel advisory that lists 23 states as high-risk areas. It has told its non-emergency staff and their families to stay away from these places because of worsening security problems.
The embassy says the situation has become more dangerous in many parts of the country.
In the latest update on April 8, 2026, the US Embassy advised all American citizens to think twice before travelling to Nigeria. The main reasons given include crime, terrorism, kidnapping, and civil unrest. These threats have made many areas unsafe for both locals and foreigners.
The list of 23 states covers more than half of Nigeria. This shows how wide the security challenges have spread across different regions. Many Nigerians feel worried that such a long list from a major embassy paints the country in a bad light.
This advisory is not the first of its kind, but the growing number of affected states has drawn attention. It highlights the ongoing problems with banditry, Boko Haram activities, and other forms of violence that continue to trouble different parts of the nation.
The warning comes at a time when the Nigerian government is working hard to improve security and attract more visitors and investors. However, repeated travel alerts from countries like the US often affect tourism, business, and the country’s image abroad.
As security remains a big concern for many citizens, this latest list serves as a reminder of the urgent need for lasting solutions. Nigerians hope that stronger efforts by the government and security agencies will one day make such warnings unnecessary and bring peace to all parts of the country.
