APC Group Accuses Barau for Gawuna’s Defection, Alleges Plot Against Garo
A political group within the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Emerging Progressives Leaders’ Forum, has accused Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin of playing a key role in the defection of the party’s 2023 Kano governorship candidate, Yusuf Gawuna, to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
In a statement released Thursday in Abuja and signed by its National Coordinator, Hafiz Idris, the forum alleged that Gawuna’s exit followed frustrations linked to his inability to secure a significant political appointment after losing the 2023 election.
Gawuna was defeated by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), and the group claims that internal party dynamics, allegedly influenced by Barau, contributed to his decision to leave the APC.
The forum further alleged that Barau is attempting to prevent the emergence of Gawuna’s former running mate, Murtala Sule Garo, as Kano State’s next deputy governor following the resignation of Aminu Abdulsalam.
According to the group, Garo had demonstrated loyalty to Barau in the past, having served as his campaign director-general during the 2015 and 2019 elections. It also pointed to past political developments in 2015, noting Garo’s support for the senator during that period.
Meanwhile, sources within the Kano State Government House indicate that Governor Yusuf is considering Garo for the deputy governorship position, citing his grassroots support and previous role as the APC’s deputy governorship candidate in 2023.
The governor is said to have shortlisted the Kano North politician after assessing multiple contenders, viewing him as a strategic choice to strengthen political unity across the state.
However, the potential appointment is reportedly facing opposition from influential political actors in Abuja. The forum alleged that Barau is uncomfortable with Garo’s possible nomination and is working behind the scenes to stop it, while backing another candidate based on political calculations such as regional considerations and influence.
Political analysts say the developments highlight an ongoing struggle for control within Kano’s political landscape, particularly as alignments begin to shift ahead of future elections.
Despite the reported pressure, insiders maintain that Governor Yusuf remains resolute and is unlikely to change his position unless faced with major political repercussions. Observers warn that the situation could further deepen divisions among political stakeholders and escalate into a broader power contest in the state.
