ADC Crisis Deepens as Melaye Accuses Bala of ‘Commercialising Conscience’
The internal crisis rocking the African Democratic Congress (ADC) intensified on Wednesday after former senator Dino Melaye launched a fresh attack on factional party leader Nafiu Bala, accusing him of compromising his integrity amid the party’s ongoing dispute with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Melaye, a prominent figure within the party, alleged that Bala had “commercialised his conscience,” suggesting that his actions in the leadership tussle were driven by personal gain rather than the collective interest of the ADC.
The controversy stems from a prolonged leadership crisis within the party, with rival factions laying claim to its national structure. Bala’s camp has continued to insist on his recognition as national chairman, citing judicial backing, while opposing stakeholders dispute the legitimacy of such claims.
The dispute has drawn in INEC, which is constitutionally empowered to recognise party leadership. However, the commission has yet to take a definitive position, citing conflicting court rulings and ongoing legal proceedings surrounding the matter.
Tensions escalated recently when supporters of Bala staged protests demanding that INEC recognise his leadership. In response, other factions within the party have accused the electoral body of bias and interference in internal party affairs.
latest remarks highlight growing divisions within the ADC, as influential members openly clash over the party’s direction and leadership. Political observers warn that the deepening rift could weaken the party’s cohesion and undermine its prospects ahead of future elections.
As legal battles continue and INEC maintains a cautious stance, the ADC crisis shows no immediate signs of resolution, raising concerns about the party’s stability in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
