NOC Sets June 27 for 2026 Olympic Day Celebration
The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) has officially designated Saturday, June 27, 2026, as the date for this year’s Olympic Day celebration.
The announcement, made by NOC President Engr. Habu Ahmed Gumel, marks the beginning of a nationwide campaign to promote physical health, social inclusion, and the core Olympic values of excellence, friendship, and respect.
The 2026 edition, organized in collaboration with the NOC Sport-for-All Commission and under the global framework of Olympic Solidarity, aims to build on the record-breaking participation seen in 2025.
A primary focus for the 2026 celebration is intergenerational connection. President Gumel emphasized that this year’s goal is to use physical activity as a bridge between younger and older generations.
“This year’s goal is to bridge generational gaps by using physical activity to foster meaningful connections between youth and older people,” Gumel stated.
By encouraging children, parents, and grandparents to participate together, the NOC hopes to strengthen community ties while highlighting the lifelong benefits of staying active.
Dr. Abdul Ibrahim, Chairman of the NOC Sport-for-All Commission, reinforced the campaign’s emphasis on inclusivity. He noted that physical activity is “far more impactful when shared” and urged every participant to invite a friend or family member to join the festivities.
The committee highlighted that the celebration is not just for elite athletes, but for all Nigerians.
Simple activities such as: Jogging and walking, Aerobics and community games to foster social joy of movement, burn calories and enhance flexibility.
The NOC has already dispatched formal invitation letters to all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. State Sports Councils have been urged to begin early preparations to ensure the event reaches every corner of the country, from urban centers to rural communities.
Furthermore, the committee has extended an invitation to corporate organizations and philanthropic individuals to support the initiative. Partnerships are expected to enhance the program’s reach while providing brands with visibility through a cause that promotes national unity and public health.
As June 27 approaches, Nigerians are encouraged to prepare their sneakers and join the global movement, celebrating the idea that sport belongs to everyone, regardless of age or ability.
