Gbenga Hashim Quits PDP After Failed Reconciliation Efforts

Presidential aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has resigned his membership of the party, citing unresolved internal crises and the collapse of reconciliation efforts within the opposition party.

In a resignation letter dated April 4, 2026, and addressed to the PDP Chairman of Usuma Ward in Bwari Area Council, Federal Capital Territory, Hashim said his decision was immediate.

He described the party as being deeply divided and plagued by persistent internal conflicts that have weakened its structure and credibility. Hashim, a former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, noted that efforts by himself and other stakeholders to reconcile warring factions within the party had failed.

He lamented that the ongoing crisis had continued to undermine unity and hinder the party’s ability to function effectively as a strong opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to him, the unresolved disputes within the PDP risk pushing the party into political irrelevance, warning that continued division could weaken its capacity to challenge the ruling party and offer credible alternatives to Nigerians.

He further expressed concern over the country’s current challenges, including insecurity and economic hardship, stressing the need for a new political direction anchored on national unity, justice, and development.

added that he would continue to work with like-minded Nigerians to promote democratic values and prevent the emergence of a one-party system in the country.

His resignation adds to the growing tension within the PDP, which has been grappling with internal disagreements and factional struggles in recent times, raising concerns about its cohesion and preparedness for upcoming elections.
