The Federal Government has initiated plans to acquire emergency care helicopters as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s emergency medical response system under a new integrated national air ambulance framework.

The initiative, approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is aimed at enhancing rapid response to critical health emergencies across the country, particularly in hard-to-reach and underserved areas. The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Ali Pate, is leading the project, including ongoing engagements with global aviation manufacturers such as Airbus to facilitate procurement and technical support.

According to officials, the proposed helicopters will operate as air ambulances within an Integrated National Ground-to-Air Health Emergency Management System. The system is designed to connect road ambulances, emergency communication centres, and aeromedical evacuation services into a unified structure to improve coordination and response efficiency.

The move is expected to significantly reduce response times in life-threatening situations such as road traffic accidents, cardiac emergencies, and maternal health complications. It will also improve access to urgent medical care in rural communities where transportation challenges often delay treatment.

As part of the engagement process, the health minister recently inspected an emergency medical helicopter facility in France to assess its operational capabilities and suitability for Nigeria’s healthcare needs.

The partnership is also expected to include training for personnel, maintenance support, and knowledge transfer to ensure sustainability. The development aligns with the Federal Government’s broader health sector reforms and complements ongoing efforts to strengthen the National Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance Scheme (NEMSAS).

Nigeria has long faced challenges with limited ambulance coverage, delayed emergency response, and weak coordination among healthcare providers. Experts believe the introduction of air ambulance services could help bridge these gaps and bring the country closer to global best practices in emergency care delivery.

While the timeline for deployment has not yet been disclosed, stakeholders say successful implementation will depend on adequate funding, strong inter-agency collaboration, and efficient management of the system.

If fully realised, the initiative is expected to significantly improve emergency healthcare outcomes and save lives by ensuring faster and more reliable medical response nationwide.
