Struggling with Picky Eaters? Experts Share Easy Tips for Parents

Many children go through a stage where they become very picky about food.

This is normal, especially when new dishes are introduced. Kids often stick to familiar meals and refuse vegetables, proteins, or other healthy options. Feeding time can turn stressful for parents, but child health experts say it can be handled well with the right approach.

Picky eating may lead to bigger problems if it goes on for too long. Children who avoid important food groups can miss out on nutrients needed for strong immunity and healthy growth. In the short term, they may become underweight, feel tired easily, or get upset over small things.

Over time, this can cause poor development, weak bones, and even raise the risk of serious illnesses later in life.

Experts advise parents to aim for a balanced diet right from the weaning stage. Make sure the child gets something from each major food group every day. If a child refuses meat or eggs, try other proteins like fish, beans, or soybeans. For vegetables they dislike, mix in carrots or other options in small amounts. The goal is not perfection but to cover the basics so the child still grows well.

Patience is key when introducing new foods. It can take seven or eight tries before a child accepts something new. Experts say parents should avoid turning mealtimes into fights. Instead, offer the same food again calmly on different days. Creative ideas like blending healthy items into favourite meals or cutting food into fun shapes can make eating more exciting.

If the child shows signs of poor growth or gets very upset during meals, it is wise to seek help from a doctor. Supplements may be useful for a short time, but fresh, natural foods remain the best choice. Planning meals with variety while focusing on quality rather than forcing large portions helps build better eating habits.

With these simple steps, parents can reduce stress at the table and support their child’s long-term health. Good nutrition in the early years lays a strong foundation for a happy and active life.
