Ondo APC Leaders Reject Candidate Imposition Ahead of 2027 Primaries

Leaders of the All Progressives Congress in Akure South Local Government Area of Ondo State have cautioned party authorities against imposing candidates in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections, insisting that only credible and grassroots-oriented aspirants should emerge from the primaries.

The position was contained in a communiqué issued on Sunday following a meeting of party stakeholders in Akure and signed by the group’s chairman, Tony Ala, alongside other leaders.

The stakeholders urged both state and national leadership of the party to ensure a transparent primary process that produces candidates who are competent, popular, and loyal to the party. They warned that the imposition of unpopular aspirants could weaken the party’s electoral chances.

The communiqué also reiterated opposition to the granting of automatic tickets, stressing that aspirants must earn their candidacy through due process and public acceptance.

In addition, the leaders expressed support for the emergence of an indigene of Akure as the next governor after the tenure of the incumbent, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, noting that the state capital has yet to produce a governor since Ondo State was created in 1976.

They said efforts would be intensified to position a qualified candidate from Akure for the governorship election, with a focus on securing victory for the party.

For legislative positions, the group endorsed Oluwafemi Fadairo, a former aide to the governor, for the Akure North/Akure South Federal House of Representatives seat, and Adeola Fynch, a former Director of Administration to the Senate, for the Ondo State House of Assembly, Akure South Constituency I. The endorsements were based on their perceived competence, loyalty, and grassroots appeal.

The leaders also passed a vote of confidence in Governor Aiyedatiwa, commending his inclusive leadership and efforts to sustain unity within the party. They pledged continued support for his administration.

Furthermore, the group declared readiness to mobilise support for the re-election of President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

They reaffirmed their commitment to collaboration with party stakeholders to strengthen the APC’s position in the state, while urging members to remain united ahead of the primaries.

Historically, no indigene of Akure has held the governorship of Ondo State, despite previous attempts, including two unsuccessful bids by Eyitayo Jegede of the Peoples Democratic Party in 2016 and 2020.
