Resident Doctors to Go on Indefinite Nationwide Strike Tuesday
The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced plans to commence an indefinite nationwide strike starting Tuesday, citing the Federal Government’s failure to address key demands affecting its members.
The decision, described as a Total and Indefinite Comprehensive Strike (TICS), follows prolonged disputes over unpaid salaries, delayed allowances, and poor working conditions in public hospitals across the country.
According to the association, several agreements previously reached with the government have yet to be fully implemented, prompting renewed frustration among resident doctors who form a critical part of Nigeria’s healthcare workforce.
NARD had earlier suspended a similar strike action after receiving assurances from government officials regarding the settlement of outstanding arrears and improvements in welfare. However, the union says those promises remain largely unfulfilled, leaving members with no option but to resume industrial action.
Among the key issues raised by the doctors are the non-payment of salary arrears, delays in the disbursement of residency training funds, and inadequate hazard allowances despite the demanding nature of their duties.
Healthcare experts warn that the strike could significantly disrupt services in public hospitals nationwide, as resident doctors are responsible for a large share of patient care, including emergency and specialized services.
Efforts to avert the strike are reportedly ongoing, with stakeholders engaging in last-minute negotiations. However, there has been no official confirmation of a breakthrough as the strike date approaches.
The looming industrial action is expected to place additional strain on Nigeria’s healthcare system, which has long grappled with underfunding, workforce shortages, and recurring labour disputes.
