UEFA Insists Italy Must Overhaul Stadiums to Retain Euro 2032 Hosting Rights

UEFA has delivered a firm ultimatum to Italian football authorities to modernize the nation’s crumbling stadium infrastructure or risk being stripped of co-hosting duties for the 2032 European Championship.

The warning, issued during a recent summit at UEFA headquarters, highlights growing concerns that Italy’s current facilities fall significantly short of the standards required for a major international tournament. Italy is currently slated to co-host the event alongside Turkey, but UEFA officials have hinted that they are prepared to reconsider the arrangement if tangible progress isn’t made within the next two years.

While Italy boasts some of the most historic venues in world football, many of its stadiums have not seen significant investment since the 1990 World Cup.

Many venues lack modern amenities, accessibility features, and corporate hospitality requirements.

Protracted legal and administrative battles have famously stalled new stadium projects for clubs like AC Milan, Inter Milan, and AS Roma for over a decade.

New UEFA mandates require venues to meet strict environmental and security protocols that many Italian “Stadi” currently fail to reach.

UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin has reportedly emphasized that “blueprints are no longer enough.” Italy must present a finalized list of five venues that meet all tournament criteria by a strict 2026 deadline.

Currently, only a handful of stadiums such as the Juventus Stadium in Turin are considered “turnkey” ready. Iconic venues like the San Siro in Milan and the Stadio Olimpico in Rome require extensive renovations, while projects in cities like Florence and Cagliari remain bogged down in local opposition and funding disputes.

Losing the Euro 2032 co-hosting role would be a massive blow to the Italian economy and the prestige of the FIGC (Italian Football Federation).

The warning is particularly pointed given that co-host Turkey has undergone a massive stadium construction boom over the last decade. With several ultra-modern venues already operational in Istanbul and beyond, UEFA has the option to award the entire tournament to Turkey or seek a new partner if Italy fails to deliver.

“The clock is ticking,” a UEFA spokesperson noted. “Italy is a pillar of European football, but tradition alone cannot host a 24-team tournament in the 21st century.”

Italian government officials have responded by pledging to streamline the “stadium law” to bypass local bureaucracy, but for UEFA, the proof will be in the breaking of ground, not the signing of documents.
