First Lady Oluremi Tinubu Launches National Food Bank to Combat Child Malnutrition

First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu has launched the advocacy campaign for the National Community Food Bank Programme in Abuja.

Set for a nationwide rollout in April 2026, the initiative aims to eradicate malnutrition among children under six.

The programme will utilize Primary Health Centres to register vulnerable households. Mrs. Tinubu stated, “This programme is designed to strengthen community nutrition support, improve access to safe and nutritious food for vulnerable children, and contribute meaningfully to the national response to ending child malnutrition.”

Caregivers will receive nutrition counseling and vouchers for local food items at community-based banks. She noted, “Caregivers will receive counselling and be given food vouchers that they can redeem for nutritious locally grown foods at food banks that will be established close to the health centres.”

A Trust Fund involving the private sector and overseen by credible individuals will ensure financial transparency. She explained, “This initiative will be funded through a Trust Fund by willing private sector partners and well-meaning Nigerians, and to ensure accountability, the Trust Fund will be overseen by credible Nigerians.”

Traditional and religious leaders were urged to mobilize their communities to ensure no family is excluded. She remarked, “We will be needing a lot of support from you, our revered traditional and religious leaders, to raise awareness and sensitise households to ensure no eligible family is left behind.”

This multi-sectoral partnership seeks to build a sustainable health safety net for the nation. The First Lady concluded, “Together, we will build healthier and stronger generations of Nigerian children.”
