Burkina Faso Leader Rules Out Elections, Says Democracy Not for Us

Burkina Faso’s military leader, Captain Ibrahim Traore, has ruled out holding elections anytime soon. He made it clear that democracy is not the right path for the country at this stage.

In his view, the focus should be on other priorities rather than voting and political campaigns. This statement has surprised many people both inside and outside the country.

During a recent interview on state television, Traore told citizens to stop thinking about democracy. He explained that his government is not even discussing elections right now. “Democracy isn’t for us,” he said in plain words. The message was direct and left little room for debate about a quick return to civilian rule.

Traore first took power through a military takeover in September 2022. Since then, he has made several changes to strengthen his control. These include shutting down the national electoral body and stopping all political parties from carrying out their activities. The steps have helped the military stay firmly in charge.

Originally, there was a plan to hand over power to a civilian government by July 2024. However, the military leaders later extended that timeline by five full years. This decision means the army will continue running the country for a much longer period than many had expected.

The move has faced strong criticism from international groups, including the United Nations. They have called on Burkina Faso’s leaders to restore democratic processes and allow greater freedom for citizens.

Many worry that delaying elections could weaken public trust in the government.

At the same time, Burkina Faso is still fighting a long-running conflict with jihadist groups that has lasted for over ten years. The military says this security crisis is the main reason they need more time before stepping aside. For now, stability and safety remain the top concerns for the country’s leaders.
