Benue Labour Party Declares Rep. Philip Agbese State Leader Following Defection
The Labour Party (LP) in Benue State has officially declared Representative Philip Agbese as the new leader of the party in the state.
This announcement follows his recent defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Labour Party.
The state chapter, through a statement by its Media Director, Aluh Moses Odeh, explained that Agbese is now the highest-ranking elected official under the LP banner in Benue. According to party convention, this position automatically makes him the party’s natural leader.
The leadership noted that the party had struggled significantly following the 2023 elections due to a lack of support. They reached out to Agbese because they believe his charisma and political capacity are essential for reviving the party’s presence in the state.
The Benue LP also reaffirmed its loyalty to the national leadership led by Senator Esther Nenadi Usman. They cited a Supreme Court judgment as the basis for her authority and warned that any local opposition to Agbese’s leadership is an act of defiance.
According to the statement, Agbese’s entry has already served as a major boost, attracting new members and serious aspirants for the 2027 elections. The party describes him as a “rallying point” for progressive forces seeking change in Benue.
The chapter expressed high confidence that with Agbese at the helm, the Labour Party is now positioned to challenge the ruling APC. They believe the party is currently on a path toward growth and is prepared to cause a major political upset in future polls.
