Anambra Government Demolishes Guest House, Destroys ₦80m Illicit Drugs

The Anambra State Government recently demolished the Airtight Guest House and Bar at Y-Junction, Okpuno, in the Awka South Local Government Area.

This action followed a strategic night raid by the “Agunaechemba” security operatives, who uncovered significant criminal activity on the premises.

During the operation, security forces recovered a large cache of illicit drugs, including Tramadol, Indian hemp, nitrous oxide, and Rohypnol. In addition to the narcotics, a locally made single-barrel firearm and evidence of organized prostitution were discovered within the facility.

The state government justified the demolition under the Anambra Homeland Security Law, which permits the seizure and destruction of properties used for kidnapping, drug trafficking, or other serious crimes. Officials emphasized that this serves as a stern warning to property owners to vet their tenants thoroughly.

The raid resulted in the arrest of several key staff members, including the guest house manager, supervisor, storekeeper, and bar attendant. Additionally, approximately 20 suspected prostitutes and 18 male patrons found at the scene were taken into custody for further investigation.

The manager, Paul Chike, claimed he was only overseeing the business for the owner and had attempted to restrict illegal activities. He further alleged that the recovered firearm had been abandoned by a previous guest, though authorities proceeded with the demolition regardless of these claims.

The operation was led by Ken Emeakayi, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Community Security, who reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to sanitizing the state.

The total value of the illicit substances and the impact of the raid highlight the government’s aggressive stance against organized crime.
