UNIJOS Orders Immediate Hostel Evacuation Over Security Concerns

The University of Jos (UNIJOS) has directed all students to vacate the institution’s hostels with immediate effect following escalating security concerns in Jos and nearby areas.

The order was issued on Wednesday by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Tanko Ishaya, after disturbances described as “near chaotic scenarios” were reported around the university earlier in the day, raising fears over student safety.

To facilitate the process, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has arranged transportation for the evacuation, with the vehicles permitted to operate during curfew hours.

A statement released by the Deputy Registrar (Information and Public Relations), Emmanuel Madugu, on behalf of the Registrar, outlined a two-phase evacuation plan.

Students whose parents or guardians reside within Jos and its environs are scheduled to leave from 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, while those whose families live outside the area will be evacuated on Thursday.

The university management, however, assured students and the wider university community that sufficient security arrangements have been put in place to safeguard the hostels and the campus.
