UK Panel Flags AI-Assisted Answers, Dietician Removed from Register
A Nigerian dietician has been removed from the United Kingdom’s professional register after being found to have used ChatGPT to generate answers during a remote job interview with the National Health Service.
The decision followed a hearing by the Health and Care Professions Tribunal Service, which found that the candidate relied on artificial intelligence to provide real-time responses during the virtual assessment.
The tribunal heard that the incident occurred during an interview for an oncology dietician position at Royal Surrey County Hospital in March 2024, conducted via Microsoft Teams as the candidate was in Nigeria at the time.
According to the panel, the candidate frequently asked for questions to be repeated and restated them slowly, actions interpreted as attempts to gain time to generate responses using AI.
One member of the interview panel reportedly input the same questions into ChatGPT and observed close similarities between the tool’s responses and the candidate’s answers.
Concerns were also raised by multiple panel members, who suspected the use of external assistance both during the interview and in a follow-up case study assessment.
While the candidate responded confidently to personal questions, the tribunal noted a pattern of hesitation when addressing clinical queries.
Following its findings, the tribunal concluded that the conduct amounted to professional misconduct and ordered her removal from the register.
