Turaki-Led PDP Warns INEC Actions Could Undermine Democracy
The National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party led by Tanimu Turaki has criticised the Independent National Electoral Commission over its recent decision affecting the African Democratic Congress, alleging bias against opposition parties.
In a statement issued on Thursday by its National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the PDP expressed concern that the commission’s actions could heighten political tension and undermine Nigeria’s democratic process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The party claimed that recent political developments suggested a pattern of interference in opposition affairs, warning that such actions risk destabilising the country’s political environment.
It further alleged that key national institutions, including INEC, were being perceived as tools in advancing partisan interests, particularly in relation to the derecognition of the National Working Committee of the ADC led by David Mark.
While acknowledging that INEC has the legal authority to monitor political parties, the PDP raised concerns about the timing and implications of its actions, suggesting they could fuel speculation about the possible deregistration of opposition parties.
The party urged INEC and other national institutions to resist external pressures and prioritise the country’s democratic integrity, calling for a non-partisan approach in handling political matters.
INEC had earlier announced the removal of key ADC officials, including National Chairman David Mark and National Secretary Rauf Aregbesola, from its records, citing compliance with a court order directing it to maintain the status quo pending the determination of ongoing litigation.
The ADC has been embroiled in a leadership crisis since 2025 following the emergence of a new National Working Committee under Mark, a development that sparked disputes among party factions.
The disagreement traces back to the tenure of former National Chairman Ralph Nwosu, which ended in August 2022, but whose involvement in the 2025 leadership transition generated internal opposition and legal challenges.
The situation has led to multiple court cases, raising concerns about the party’s readiness for the 2027 elections.
Meanwhile, Mark and ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi have accused the ruling All Progressives Congress and President Bola Tinubu of contributing to the party’s internal crisis.
However, APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka has dismissed the allegations, maintaining that INEC’s actions were based on a valid court ruling and aligned with electoral laws and democratic principles.
