Super Eagles Static at 26th Spot in Latest FIFA Rankings
The Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) released its latest world rankings yesterday, confirming that Nigeria’s Super Eagles have maintained their position as the 26th best team in the world.
Despite a busy March international window that saw the three-time African champions secure a victory and a draw, the points gained were not enough to move them up the ladder. The Eagles remain the third-highest ranked team in Africa, trailing only Morocco (8th) and Senegal (14th).
The Super Eagles spent their recent international break in Antalya, Turkey, under the guidance of Eric Chelle. The team showed flashes of brilliance, particularly in their 2-1 victory over Iran on March 27, where goals from Akor Adams and Moses Simon secured the win. However, a late equalizer from Jordan in a 2-2 draw on Tuesday denied the Eagles the clean sweep that might have propelled them past South Korea (25th).
Analysts suggest that Nigeria’s current stability in the rankings is a direct result of their bronze-medal finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) earlier this year. During that tournament, the team recorded five wins including victories over Tunisia and Algeria before falling to eventual champions Morocco in a tense semi-final shootout.
On the global stage, there was a major shake-up at the summit. France has officially reclaimed the world number one spot, dethroning reigning European champions Spain, who slipped to second after a goalless draw with Egypt. World champions Argentina round out the top three.
