PSC Urges Nigerian Youths to Join Police Amid Ongoing Reforms

The Police Service Commission (PSC) has called on Nigerian youths to enlist in the Nigeria Police Force, describing the ongoing reform period as the most favourable time to join the service.

The appeal was made on Wednesday by a member of the commission and retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Taiwo Lakanu, during an assessment visit to the Ogun State Police Command headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta, as part of the nationwide recruitment exercise.

Lakanu said the recruitment aligns with the Federal Government’s directive to boost the strength of the Force by 50,000 personnel.

He expressed satisfaction with the turnout of applicants in Ogun State, noting that it signals increasing interest and renewed public confidence in the police.

According to him, only qualified candidates will be considered, emphasizing that merit remains central to the recruitment process. He urged Nigerian youths to take advantage of the opportunity and pursue careers in the Force.

Lakanu highlighted improvements in welfare, salary structure, and career advancement opportunities, describing policing as a fulfilling profession with access to training and prospects for promotion to senior ranks.

Addressing concerns about low participation in some regions, particularly the Southwest, he attributed the trend to socio-economic challenges and negative perceptions of the profession. He maintained that policing remains a noble career despite public misconceptions.

On security, Lakanu said the police are making steady progress in combating crime, expressing confidence that ongoing reforms and leadership changes will further enhance operational effectiveness. He added that the Federal Government remains committed to strengthening the Force.

The retired DIG also commended officers of the Ogun State Command, describing it as one of the best in the country, and attributed the relatively low crime rate in the state to their professionalism.
