Adelabu Urged to Prioritise Power Sector Reforms over Political Ambition

A public affairs commentator, Mogaji Wole Arisekola, has advised the Minister of Power, Bayo Adelabu, to focus on delivering tangible improvements in Nigeria’s electricity sector before pursuing any elective political ambition.

In a statement, Arisekola acknowledged Adelabu’s reputation as a determined and accomplished individual, noting his academic background at Obafemi Awolowo University and his willingness to take on difficult challenges. However, he stressed that performance in public office, particularly in a critical sector like power, must take precedence over political aspirations.

He referenced the experience of former Minister of Power, Babatunde Fashola, who, despite initial promises, encountered the complexities of Nigeria’s power sector after assuming office. According to Arisekola, the comparison highlights the need for realistic expectations and sustained effort in addressing systemic challenges.

The commentator noted that Nigerians continue to grapple with erratic electricity supply, rising tariffs, and infrastructural deficits, adding that these issues shape public perception more than policy pronouncements.

He urged the minister to prioritise strengthening power generation, improving transmission networks, and ensuring efficient distribution nationwide. Arisekola further emphasised the importance of transparency and accountability in rebuilding public trust, stating that citizens expect measurable progress, reduced outages, and a more reliable electricity system.

While acknowledging that political ambition is legitimate, he cautioned that seeking elective office without first addressing pressing sectoral challenges could be perceived as premature. He maintained that credibility in leadership is built on performance and visible impact rather than rhetoric.

He concluded that if Adelabu succeeds in delivering meaningful reforms in the power sector, his public image would improve, providing a stronger foundation for any future political pursuit.
