ADC Chairman Demands INEC Boss’ Removal Over Leadership Dispute
The embattled National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, David Mark, has called for the immediate resignation or removal of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Joash Amupitan, citing a loss of confidence in the electoral body’s leadership.
Mark made the demand during a press conference on Thursday, accusing INEC of partisanship and alleging that its recent actions have undermined Nigeria’s democratic process.
He stated that the commission could no longer be trusted to conduct credible elections, insisting that both the chairman and national commissioners should step down.
The ADC chairman also declared that the party would proceed with its scheduled programmes, noting that there is no legal requirement mandating INEC’s presence for such activities, provided due notice has been given.
He further urged the international community to take note of INEC’s actions, warning of what he described as a growing threat to Nigeria’s democracy and stability.
Mark’s remarks followed INEC’s decision to remove his name and that of the party’s National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, from its official portal.
Despite the development, he maintained that the party leadership that emerged from its National Executive Committee meeting held on July 29, 2025, remains valid, adding that the ADC would continue with its planned congresses and convention.
He also warned that INEC would be held accountable for any consequences arising from its decisions.
Providing further context, Mark explained that the outcomes of the NEC meeting were formally communicated to INEC, which subsequently uploaded the names of the party’s National Working Committee members based on those resolutions.
He added that a former deputy national chairman, Nafiu Bala, had resigned from his position in May 2025, with the resignation duly communicated to INEC in August of the same year.
Mark, however, noted that Bala later approached the court in September seeking recognition as chairman, despite his earlier resignation and the inauguration of the current leadership, which he said was monitored by INEC.
