Saraki Opts Out of 2027 Presidential Race, Eyes 2031 for Northern Rotation

By 𝔸bdulrazak Tomiwa

Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki has announced he will not contest the 2027 presidential election. His decision is based on a commitment to national unity and the principle of power rotation between the North and South.

By stepping aside, he aims to prevent the political friction often caused by zoning disputes.

Saraki emphasized that fairness dictates the South should complete two terms, having started in 2023. He believes upholding this cycle ensures all regions feel respected within the nation’s governance. He argued that choosing not to run in 2027 is a necessary step to maintain equity in the Nigerian political space.

He further noted that a Northern bid in 2027 would lack the essential cross-regional support needed for success. Entering the race early would likely alienate Southern voters who expect to hold power for the full eight-year cycle.

Saraki suggests that strategic patience is vital for maintaining harmony between the country’s geopolitical zones.

Regarding the timing, Saraki stated, “I’m not contesting in 2027 because I believe that it’s only fair that the South came in 2023 and let them finish in 2027. In 2031, there is no ambiguity for those of us that come from the North. In 2027, I’m not going to contest because we will not get the sympathy of those in the South; they have four years and there’s another four, let them finish and go.”

The former Governor is now focusing on 2031, when he believes the path for a Northern candidate will be undisputed. He argued that by then, there will be no room for debate regarding which region should produce the president.

This approach is intended to present a candidacy rooted in national consensus rather than internal party division.

Concluding his announcement, Saraki placed his future aspirations in the hands of providence, stating: “So when it comes to 2031, God sparing our lives and giving us good health, it’s North as opposed to anything that gives anybody an excuse that in 2031 those from the North want to contest, those from the South want to contest.” He ultimately positions himself as a statesman prioritizing national stability over immediate ambition.
