Jordan 2-2 Nigeria: Debut for Otele, Red Card for Iwobi as Unbeaten Run Continues
While Emmanuel Fernandez celebrated his full debut for the Super Eagles with a goal, the match ended on a sour note as Alex Iwobi was sent off late for violent conduct, marring the performance of Eric Chelle’s side.
Following their 2-1 victory over Iran on Friday, Nigeria opted for six changes to the lineup. Yira Sor made his debut in an attacking quartet featuring Akor Adams, Ademola Lookman, and Moses Simon. Defensively, Emmanuel Fernandez earned his first start at center-back alongside Igoh Ogbu, while Zaidu Sanusi and Bright Osayi-Samuel occupied the full-back positions.
With Maduka Okoye sidelined by injury, Francis Uzoho took over goalkeeping duties. The midfield featured a pairing of Frank Onyeka and Raphael Onyedika, while veteran players like captain Wilfred Ndidi and Alex Iwobi began the match as substitutes.
Jordan opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Mousa Al-Tamari capitalized on a clever free-kick routine, beating the keeper with a powerful strike from distance. Nigeria nearly responded immediately after a skillful run by Moses Simon set up Raphael Onyedika; however, his goal-bound shot was disallowed for offside after it deflected off Akor Adams.
Nigeria equalized in the 26th minute through Moses Simon, who reacted quickest after Ademola Lookman’s initial attempt was charged down. The FC Paris winger displayed excellent technique, cushioning the rebound on his chest before drilling a clinical half-volley into the bottom corner to net his second goal in two matches.
Just before the interval, Nigeria surged ahead after the Jordanian defense failed to clear a dangerous cross from Bright Osayi-Samuel. The ball fell to Emmanuel Fernandez at the back post; the Rangers defender remained calm under pressure, controlling the ball before clinicaly finishing with his left foot. It was a landmark moment for the 25-year-old, who marked his full debut with a goal in only his second outing since switching international allegiance.
The second half presented new challenges for Eric Chelle. In the 57th minute, goalkeeper Francis Uzoho was forced off with what appeared to be a hamstring injury sustained while clearing the ball, leading to the introduction of Adebayo Adeleye. Shortly after, Chelle made a double tactical substitution, bringing on the experienced pair of Alex Iwobi and Wilfred Ndidi for debutant Yira Sor and Raphael Onyedika to solidify the midfield.
Substitute Mohammad Al-Daoud made an instant impact, scoring just two minutes after his introduction. He met Noor Al-Rawabdeh’s fine cross with a composed finish in the 77th minute to bring Jordan level at 2-2.
Nigeria’s search for a late winner saw Samuel Chukwueze and debutant Philip Otele introduced in the 81st minute, replacing Simon and Onyeka. The tactical shifts proved ineffective, and the night ended in frustration as Alex Iwobi received a straight red for violent conduct deep into stoppage time. The dismissal is expected to overshadow the team’s general display.
Nigeria extended their unbeaten streak under Chelle to 19 games with the draw. However, the late concession and Iwobi’s dismissal leave the coaching staff with significant concerns to resolve before their next outing.
