Former Minister of Information and former Deputy Governor of Nasarawa State, Labaran Maku, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP).Â
He announced the move at his residence in Wakama, Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area, stating his intent to strengthen the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
Maku explained that his decision was driven by a desire to contribute to the SDP’s growth and to honor the legacy of the late MKO Abiola. He also cited the late Senator Godiya Akwashiki as an inspiration, praising the senator’s developmental projects and performance as a representative of the Nasarawa North Senatorial District.
In his formal resignation letter to the PDP, Maku attributed his exit to the persistent internal crises within the party. He noted that after extensive consultations with his family, political associates, and traditional leaders, it became necessary to seek a new political platform for the survival of his followers.
The former minister expressed his readiness to serve in any capacity requested by the party or his constituents. He specifically mentioned his willingness to contest the vacant Nasarawa North senatorial seat following the death of Senator Akwashiki, provided the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) gives the necessary approval.
During the briefing, Maku urged state governors to refrain from imposing successors on their people, advocating instead for democratic principles and good governance. He called on the residents of Nasarawa State to remain united and maintain peace to ensure continued regional development.
Receiving the new member, the SDP Zonal Chairman for Nasarawa North, Mohammed Audu, welcomed Maku and assured him of equal rights within the party. He expressed optimism that Maku’s defection would significantly boost the SDP’s support base across the state’s 13 local government areas.
