2027: I’m Yet to Endorse Any Rivers Candidate, Clarifies Wike

By Momodu Favour

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that he has not endorsed any candidate for forthcoming political contests in Rivers State, stressing that such decisions rest with party elders.

Wike made the clarification on Monday night while addressing a joint gathering of stakeholders from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at his official residence in Life Camp, Abuja.

The minister cautioned against what he described as a growing rush for endorsements, warning that premature alignments driven by personal ambition could trigger internal divisions within the political fold.

According to him, the current strength and influence of the Rivers political bloc were built on unity, trust and shared commitment, rather than financial inducements.

“If we were not working together, if we were not united, it would be difficult. People are not happy that we are working together, so they must find anything to make sure we are divided,” Wike said.

He alleged that external forces were actively working to fracture the cohesion among stakeholders due to the success of their collaboration, urging members to remain vigilant and focused.

Wike also expressed disappointment with some beneficiaries of the group’s political goodwill, accusing them of turning against the leadership after securing appointments. He described such actions as a betrayal and a reflection of poor character.

“Woe be unto the person that we have given an appointment [who] goes back to castigate,” he warned, adding that many who once sought his mentorship could no longer face him.

On the issue of endorsements, the former Rivers governor dismissed speculations that he had privately backed individuals for local offices, maintaining that his position remains consistent both publicly and privately.

“I have not endorsed anybody. I will not do that until the elders sit,” he stated.

Wike, however, reaffirmed that the group had collectively endorsed President Bola Tinubu, noting that this remained their only official political position so far.

He further emphasised his commitment to transparency, insisting that his statements remain consistent regardless of the setting.

“Anything I say in the night is what I will say in the daytime,” he added.

The minister commended council chairmen, Rivers elders and party leaders from both APC and PDP for their coordination in mobilising stakeholders, noting that the absence of complaints about inclusiveness reflected the success of the engagement.

Political observers say Wike’s remarks may be aimed at calming rising tensions ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle, while reinforcing his influence within Rivers State’s evolving political landscape.
