Zulum Sacks Cabinet, Dismisses Commissioners
Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State has dissolved the State Executive Council, dismissing all serving commissioners in a major cabinet reshuffle ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Bukar Tijani, on Monday. According to the statement, all commissioners have been directed to hand over to their respective permanent secretaries on or before April 3, 2026.
The move is widely seen as part of political preparations for the upcoming election cycle, as Nigerian law requires political appointees to resign from office before contesting elective positions or participating in party primaries.
The state government noted that the dissolution is intended to allow interested members of the cabinet to pursue political ambitions while ensuring compliance with electoral guidelines. Governor Zulum expressed appreciation to the outgoing commissioners for their service, commending their contributions to the development of the state during their tenure.
In the interim, permanent secretaries are expected to oversee the affairs of ministries and departments to ensure continuity in governance until a new executive council is constituted.
The dissolution marks a significant political development in Borno State, with expectations that a new cabinet will be announced in the coming weeks as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify.
