Gawuna Resigns as FMBN Chairman Amid Defection Speculations

The Chairman of the Governing Board of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN), Nasiru Gawuna, has resigned from his position, fueling speculation of an imminent political defection in Kano State.
Gawuna, who was the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 elections, tendered his resignation in a letter dated March 27, 2026, stating that it takes immediate effect.
In the letter, he explained that his decision was in compliance with directives issued by President Bola Tinubu, mandating political appointees to step down in line with provisions of the Electoral Act ahead of the next election cycle.
“My resignation is in strict compliance with the President’s directive requiring all political appointees to step down in accordance with the provisions of the Electoral Act,” Gawuna stated.
However, sources familiar with the development indicate that the resignation may also be linked to ongoing political realignments in Kano. The former deputy governor is reportedly set to align with Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, a key political figure in the state.
According to insiders, Gawuna has concluded plans to defect from the APC and is expected to formally join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), with an announcement anticipated in the coming days.
The move, if confirmed, could signal a significant shift in Kano’s political landscape, given Gawuna’s influence and political base in the state.
Neither Gawuna nor officials of the ADC have publicly confirmed the planned defection as of the time of filing this report.
Political observers say the development underscores ongoing alignments and repositioning among key actors ahead of future elections, particularly in Kano, a state considered crucial in Nigeria’s electoral politics.
