Sokoto PDP Boycotts Abuja Convention, Cites Neutral Stance in Party Crisis

The Sokoto State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has announced its decision to stay away from a national convention scheduled to hold in Abuja and organised by a faction of the party linked to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

The state chapter said its position reflects its neutral stance in the ongoing leadership crisis within the opposition party, adding that it does not recognise any faction.

In a telephone interview on Saturday, the state Publicity Secretary, Hassan Sanyinawal, stated that the Sokoto PDP would not participate in the exercise, noting that its members remain committed to the party but are not aligned with any of the rival blocs.

He explained that the chapter had also declined participation in a similar convention held in Ibadan, reinforcing its decision to distance itself from factional activities.

The development highlights the growing divisions within the PDP, where competing groups have continued to lay claim to leadership structures and organise parallel activities across the country.

The party has been grappling with internal disagreements since disputes emerged over its national leadership and the conduct of its 2025 convention in Ibadan, which was later invalidated by a court over procedural lapses, including failure to follow electoral guidelines.

Following the court ruling, rival factions have emerged, with one group aligned with Wike and another loyal to the previously recognised leadership, each pushing ahead with plans for separate conventions.

Efforts to resolve the crisis have so far yielded limited results, as tensions persist within the party, raising concerns about its unity and readiness ahead of future elections.
