Delta Scraps Ozoro Festival After Viral Women Assaults Spark Outrage

The Delta State Government has banned fertility festival in Ozoro, Isoko North Local Government Area, following reports that some women were assaulted during the celebration, an incident that has drawn widespread condemnation.

Authorities described the development as deeply disturbing and unacceptable, stating that such conduct has no place in society, especially during a cultural event meant to promote unity.

The government also said measures were being taken to prevent a recurrence, including a review of security arrangements at public gatherings.

The incident reportedly led to panic and confusion, with multiple accounts alleging that women were harassed during the festival. One of the victims, a 300 level student of Southern Delta University, Ozoro, narrated her experience, saying she was attacked by a group of young men shortly after arriving at the area, with her clothes torn and personal belongings taken before she was eventually rescued.

Community and traditional leaders have acknowledged that the situation was caused by the actions of some individuals who misinterpreted and misused the cultural event. In a statement, Ozoro leaders said the misconduct involved the harassment of two young women and confirmed that security agencies were alerted and have begun investigations.

They stressed that such behaviour is not part of the community’s cultural values and urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information that could damage the reputation of the kingdom’s traditions.

The Ovie of Ozoro Kingdom also condemned the incident, calling for the arrest and prosecution of those responsible. He emphasized that no cultural gathering should take place without prior approval from the palace to ensure proper guidance and prevent similar occurrences.

The chairman of Isoko North Local Government Area described the situation as unfortunate, noting that the event was not properly coordinated or communicated to key stakeholders. He assured that authorities would support efforts to bring perpetrators to justice.

The Delta State Police Command confirmed that investigations are ongoing, with officials clarifying that available reports do not confirm claims of rape, but rather incidents of harassment linked to lapses in planning and security.

Meanwhile, civil society groups and advocacy organizations have condemned the incident, describing it as a violation of women’s rights and a failure to ensure safety in public spaces. They called for stronger protections, improved security measures, and accountability for those involved.

Community voices have also expressed concern, with residents and families saying they are reconsidering participation in future festivals due to safety fears. Stakeholders are now calling for reforms, including better crowd control and stricter enforcement of rules at public events.

As investigations continue, attention has shifted to ensuring accountability and preventing a repeat of the incident, with calls for stronger safeguards to protect participants at cultural gatherings.
