Tinubu Urges Unity, Defends Reforms at APC National Convention
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday called for unity within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), while defending his administration’s reforms and highlighting economic progress at the party’s 4th Elective National Convention held at Eagles Square, Abuja.
Speaking to party delegates, Tinubu said the APC remains “strong, united, focused and ready for the future,” stressing that unity remains the party’s greatest strength and warning against internal divisions driven by personal ambition.
“This Convention must send one clear message to Nigerians and the world: our party is strong and united,” the president said.
Tinubu also used the occasion to reaffirm his administration’s commitment to the “Renewed Hope Agenda,” describing it as a governing philosophy aimed at national transformation rather than a campaign slogan.
He acknowledged that reforms have been difficult but insisted they are necessary for long-term economic stability and growth.
The president pointed to key economic indicators, noting that inflation has declined for eight consecutive months to 14.45 percent, while business activity has expanded for 12 straight months. He added that Nigeria has recorded trade surpluses, improved foreign exchange buffers, and increased investor confidence.
According to him, Nigeria’s stock market performance has strengthened, while the country’s recent Eurobond issuance was oversubscribed by 400 percent.
He also highlighted Nigeria’s removal from the Financial Action Task Force grey list as a sign of restored global financial credibility.
Tinubu said his government has made progress in infrastructure development, including the construction of major roads, as well as the modernisation of seaports and airports. He added that reforms in the oil and gas sector have renewed foreign investor interest.
Despite the gains, the president admitted that challenges remain, particularly in the power sector, citing debts to generation companies and outdated transmission infrastructure. He announced plans to establish a Grid Asset Management Company to improve electricity supply.
On democracy, Tinubu dismissed claims that the APC seeks to establish a one-party state, stating that he supports a credible opposition to strengthen governance.
He defended the Electoral Act 2026, saying it followed due legislative process and reflects national efforts to improve the electoral system.
The president urged party members to conduct themselves peacefully during the convention and accept its outcomes in good faith. “Let no contest divide us. Let no outcome embitter us,” he said.
Tinubu also called for greater inclusion of young people and women in politics, emphasizing their importance in shaping Nigeria’s future and strengthening democratic institutions.
He paid tribute to former President Muhammadu Buhari and other deceased party members, acknowledging their contributions to the growth of the APC.
The convention, themed “Unity in Progress: Consolidating the Renewed Hope Agenda,” brought together party leaders, governors, ministers, and delegates to elect new party officials and chart the APC’s future direction.
