‎Women Form Human Shield to Block DisCo Officials from Disconnecting Power ‎

By 𝔸bdulrazak Tomiwa

‎A viral video has captured a group of Nigerian women confronting officials from an Electricity Distribution Company (DisCo) to prevent them from disconnecting their power.

‎The incident occurred following a prolonged period of darkness in their community.

‎The women, speaking in Yoruba, lamented that they had been without electricity for three months. They expressed frustration over being asked to pay or face disconnection despite having to sleep outdoors due to the lack of power.

‎To stop the disconnection, the women formed a human shield around the ladder brought by the officials. This physical barrier prevented the workers from climbing the utility pole to sever the electrical wires.

‎Tensions rose during the encounter when one official attempted to push a woman aside. The rest of the group quickly surrounded him in protest, maintaining their stance and refusing to let the exercise continue.

‎The video has since gone viral, sparking widespread reactions online. Many Nigerians praised the women for their bravery and for standing up against what they described as the “extortion” of consumers by power firms.

‎The incident highlights the ongoing electricity crisis in Nigeria. While the Minister of Power recently apologized for nationwide shortages, many citizens remain frustrated by the combination of persistent blackouts and aggressive billing.
